mnemeI'd like to commend to your attention the webcomic Shaenon Garrity's Smithson (drawn by various other artists). It doesn't have as much of a single, clear focus as her more famous work, Narbonic (ie, mad science), but its topics, as well as characters, are substantially more involved and tangled.
The place? A small university campus. The themes (seen so far)? Mystic Shit, secret conspiracies, heroism, and the struggle of geeks against the forces of normality. Check it out.

One caveat: occasionally, strips are designed to scroll in all directions, and will appear without scrollbars (making them easy to mistake for incomprehensible panels). Click and drag within the image and you'll be able to see the rest of the comic in those cases.
