Firefly

Lisa and I have been watching Firefly. I'm sorry we didn't see them earlier -- but I like the way we've been watching them, (mostly) in order, off the DVD, and about one or two a day. We've seen through Ariel.


Minor Spoilers: Speculation based on info through War Stories and Buffy season 4

I think the 2x2, hands of blue villains are grown from the same seed that sprouted The Gentlemen, in Hush. They move slowly, they have a slow but nevertheless inevitable method of killing, they have rhymes about them and what they do, and they have a nearly identical fear factor.

That they also take a part of you which you need, and that both are creations of Joss Whedon are both things I noticed later.

Maybe. They’re less stylized than the Gentlemen.

I’ve been wondering if Kaylee is based on the same person as Willow. And Book as Giles. And if Wash is Joss’s self-identification character for Firefly like Zander was in Buffy.

And if Wash/Simon is the most common Firefly slash pairing. Among the male characters, at least. (Book/Jaine would probably be the least.)

Maybe less stylized. The ep on the Core planet with them is just...creepy; I couldn't think anything -but- "they're storybook villains." (only they, and the Gentlemen, are both really -nightmare- villains).

Kaylee gets more (barely, and given the length into the show) than Will does; she's disfunctional in very different ways. It's actually quite ironic that she slept her way -onto- the show but seems to get nothing at all once she's there. Actually, -River- may be the Willow character—a very damaged and messed up Willow, but with many of the same attributes (including überconfidence)

Book vs Giles...dunno. Book seems harder; very different archetype; Simon isn't that far from the other Watcher, whose name I'm blanking on, though. Wash could be the self-identification character, though there are a number that could fit into that role; I don't know that we see things from Wash's point of view often enough for that.

For the female pairings, aside from those involving the Companion, what about Kaylee/River?

The blue-handed men are pretty close to classic Men In Black; the Gentlemen, not so much.

Kaylee and Willow are both charming, perky tech-nerds with odd taste in clothing. I'm guessing Joss knows a woman like that.

Book and Giles both seem to be bookish, intellectual types who'd shy away from a fight, and they're both hiding that they're actually tougher than that. Being a Watcher isn't all that different from being a monk or a priest.

The blue handed (or gloved) men are close to classic Men In Black in, say, The Train Job. In Ariel, they're closer to The Gentlemen—MIBs don't usually massacre large numbers of people with a horrorshow weapon and then unstoppably stalk Our Heroes.

I can see the parallel to the Gentle Men,
Kayle is the warmth, and heart of the Ship and has the same innocence about her as Early Willow.

Mal/Jayne. Zoe/Kayle.
