A Good Fantasy Week

I just finished (in about a day) Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys. Excellent stuff -- it starts off closer to gringo magical realism, but it's fantasy by the end of it.

I'm next going to read Patricia McKillip's latest -- Od Magic. I don't know anything about it, but suspect I'll love it.

And on top of that, Amazon just shipped In the Coils of the Snake, which I'm pretty sure is the latest Hollow Kingdom book. The Hollow Kingdom is an excellent novel (which won Mythopeoic, and which I reviewed in a spoilery review for Mythprint), and it's sequels are quite good as well; I'm curious to see how this one comes out.

But Od Magic first. And read Anansi Boys -- it's exellent; wonderful and warm and solid (and fwiw, much, well, -nicer- than American Gods).

I thought Anansi Boys felt like the closest to the style of Sandman of any of Gaiman's novels so far.

Which is good, because I really liked Sandman.

I think I agree. Neverwhere was similar, but not quite; I really liked Stardust, but it's really not the same feel.

Od Magic is turning out to be quite good so far; reminding me of why I love McKillip's stuff and wonder how hard it is to create an RPG system designed to do the thing she does with magic.

It was a major joy having McKillip as GoH at WisCon this year! She's much like you'd guess from her stuff.

Not honestly sure; I mostly make it to WisCon, Chattacon and the original [Iowa] ICON, plus WorldCon when I can afford it.

You're a moderately well-known name in fandom. When I saw you had a lj, and that we had a number of friends in common, I figured I'd f-list you, since this is where a lot of fannish conversation goes on nowadays.

Of those, I make...Worldcon. Still, since I've been to all the worldcons in the last 12 years -except- Wisconsin, Texas, LA in '96, and Australia, we've likely been contemporaneous at at least one.

It's available -- we picked it up from a local (independant) bookstore yesterday in shrinkwrap.

Apparently I can't type while wearing gloves, on a keyboard with one of those stupid plastic covery-things, trying to hide the fact that LJ is not a work related site...

I am no longer working at a bookstore. Sad in it's own way (bye-bye employee discount) but good to be out of a dead-end job with no benefits.
