The longer version is that Dexcon started with a couple of larps set in Piers Anthony's "Double Exposure" universe. The group that ran the larps (at Lunacon) decided to run a gaming con without fees for inidivdual games and a con suite, modelling it somewhat on SF conventions--and named the organization and the con after the larps.
