The other way shouldn't require a patch. LJ already will ship authenticated users rss feeds of their friends lists, so if you're willing to give dreamwidth your lj auth data (needed for crossposting anyway), they have all the stuff aside from code needed to grab your lj friends feed and treat it as a data source for your friends page.
