First, it's a bad habit--I tend to stare at the ceiling unconciously when thinking, and I tend to be reasonably thinky when dancing -- trying to figure out what to do next or how to avoid some obstacles or whatnot (probably more than I should; I've learned over the years to really enjoy a basic step, but I do worry about a partner getting bored).
Second, there's simple necessity; particularly on a crowded dance floor like GAFilk's--I do need to look out to the press to do collision avoidance.
It's hard for me to tell, since like other bad habits, it's not something I'm concious of.
