This one problem, at least, can't be laid at Google's feet, since the physical design of the phone was entirely HTC.

Not a problem for me; not only do I have bigger hands than you; my habitual/natural holds are much more suited to the phone than yours are. (Its not like I spend any attention on self-analysis when I'm using the phone, but I seem to use a card-player's hold -- with the phone itself cradled between the botton joins of two fingers, leaving my thumbs free to roam across the keyboard, the side-buttons, or the screen fairly indiscriminately (my palms center my thumbs over the home keys without a stretch, with my right hand palm down and my right hand palm up so my thumbs are at fairly similar angles)).

OTOH, there were enough problems that I forgot to mention anemic battery life -- even -without- AIM running over most of the day, the battery doesn't last all day. At work, I have to remember to plug in or I'll be in dire straights by the time I'm heading out or to home. At cons, its even worse, particularly since I tend to > 16 hour days at cons. As it is, its at 28% battery (I forgot to charge it today) and I've only been up and about since 9. So that's a 12 hour battery life at best.
