There's actually an comedy old radio show from the 1940s called Duffy's Tavern ("Where the elite meet to eat!").

Duffy is never seen by anyone, and all conversation with low brow Archie the Manager occurs on the telephone (but you never get to hear Duffy's own voice).

Duffy being a vampire would explain a great deal about him never actually appearing in his own tavern (or own radio show!), but there was certainly nothing to suggest Duffy himself was gay.
