Wittenberg Housefilk, Fawlkes, 06

We showed up late -- about 2:40, but only missed one song:

[livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte sang "Back One Week to the Future" by The Great Lukeski (ttto One Week)

We sat down, and the filk continued with [livejournal.com profile] happyfunpaul singing "Re: Your Brains (an office memo)", by Jonathan Coulton

[livejournal.com profile] mnemex, [livejournal.com profile] drcpunk, [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon, and much of the rest of the company sang Mahna Mahna (by Henson).

Then we went to bardic

[livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen sang Merav Hoffman's The Door to Summer, with [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon

[livejournal.com profile] madfilkentist did his own Stolen Dreams

Eyal performed [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear's "World Inside the Crystal"

[livejournal.com profile] miriyami requested Masochism Tango, which [livejournal.com profile] madfilkentist sang

[livejournal.com profile] crazedcrusader sang Stormy Weather

[livejournal.com profile] drcpunk sang Hawthorn Tree, by Heather Dale

[livejournal.com profile] mnemex sang his (ok, my) own Kibeth (to an original tune, for a change)

[livejournal.com profile] bercilakslady requested Tam Lin, sung by [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon and [livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen.

[livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte sang "Fannish Individual", by John Pomeranz (originally popularized by by [livejournal.com profile] gorgeousgary's rendition at LoneStarCon and Bucconeer)

Dov Mittleman sang Invitation, by Shel Silverstein, to his own tune

Ariel Cinii sang STS Lament, by herself ttto "I am a man of constant sorrow"

[livejournal.com profile] otherdeb performed her own "Fanac".

[livejournal.com profile] jonbaker sang: [livejournal.com profile] orawnzva's "Great Explorer Zero" (ttto: "The Mary Ellen Carter" by Stan Rogers)

[livejournal.com profile] castor_biber requested Kanef's "Come Ye Muppets", which I ([livejournal.com profile] mnemex) sang.

[livejournal.com profile] mikestruffles sang most of "Bob Kanefsky"

[livejournal.com profile] happyfunpaul sang, um, some monstrosity about skullcrusher mountain. Called, strangely enough, "Skullcrusher Mountain", and written by Jonathan Coulton.

[livejournal.com profile] mikestruffles followed with the "Hockey Monkey".

Abby insta-ed, um, something appropriate.

[livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen sang Merav Hoffman's "Sleep on the Ledge".

[livejournal.com profile] marapfhile sang his own "Don't Go Into (Interstellar) Politics", ttto "Don't Go Into Politics", by The Arrogant Worms

Eyal sang [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear's "When I was a Lad" (ttto Hayes's original "When I Was a Boy")

[livejournal.com profile] miriyami sang, ttto "The Bananna Boat Song", her own, near instafilk: "Ebola!"

[livejournal.com profile] crazedcrusader sang her own "When the Filk Comes Rising" (ttto the obvious Eklar tune)

[livejournal.com profile] drcpunk read the maze scene from "Growing up Weightless", by John M. Ford

I ([livejournal.com profile] mnemex) sang my own "Grew it Myself" (ttto "Do it Yourself" by [livejournal.com profile] bedlamhouse)

[livejournal.com profile] ebartley sang [livejournal.com profile] catsittingstill's "Bin There, Dun That"

[livejournal.com profile] zsero sang "Ankh Morpork Shel Zahav" (or if you like, אנך מורפורק של זהב).

Ariel Cinii performed her own "When Science Fiction Shows Were Free", ttto "Miama 2017" by Billy Joel.

[livejournal.com profile] bercilaklsady sang her own "Precious" ttto "Drink to me only with thine Eyes," by Ben Johnson.

Mark Glasser performed Andy Brechmen's "The Ship ? Duology" (correction request: what's the name here?)

[livejournal.com profile] mikestruffles sang, ttto Jordin Kare's Darkness, (I haven't the faintest idea). Anybody? Bueler?) ""

[livejournal.com profile] sdelmonte lead "The Mongol Happy Birthday Song" for [livejournal.com profile] mamadeb

Dov sang "The Hobbit went down to Mordor"

Liam Brown sang his own "Banned from Pesach" about Argo Cornstarch

[livejournal.com profile] jonbaker sang "Rickety Tickety Piers"

We had MassFILK on a cellphone, so the company (lead by Ariel Cinii) sang "Swing Low, Sweet Double-A" to them.

They wanted to serenade us as well, so we had them call Aaron's phone, and they sang "Barett's Privateers," with us coming in on the choruses.

Judith requested Mark Glasser's "'Change at Jamaica' Farewell," which he performed.

Miram requested, and Mark Glasser performed, "Charlie and the MTA"

[livejournal.com profile] batyatoon sang her Mornington Cresent, ttto Uffington Hill (by Talis Kimberly)

[livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen sang "A Brief Summary Of Halacha As Understood By A Goy Who Hangs Around Observant Jews A Lot.", by [livejournal.com profile] akawil

[livejournal.com profile] happyfunpaul sang his own (words and music) "Fluorine Atom."

[livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen and [livejournal.com profile] batyatoon sang "Lilo" (by Batya Wittenberg, Merav Hoffman, and Seanan McGuire) ttto "Wendy"

[livejournal.com profile] marapfhile sang his own "CD Boxes", also ttto "Little Boxes".

[livejournal.com profile] madfilkentist sang his translation of [livejournal.com profile] filker0's "Close Your Eyes" into German: "Mach Die Augen Zu", followed by a group performance of the same song in English for those that hadn't heard it before.

Eyal sang [livejournal.com profile] orawnzva's "Thomas and the Fairie Ring"

And we ended with a nameless mashup lead by Ariel Cinii, of Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole" and some part of Carmen.

Yeah, yeah!

This sounds like an utterly marvelous filk session, and would have been equally marvelous no matter where it had taken place. I probably don't know most of the filkers you mention, at least not by their LJ names, but to name one whose name I hadn't heard mentioned in years, I'm quite glad Marc Glasser is still around and making music. Keep on having fun -- I don't know if I'll be at the kind of filk where I could even remotely do that kind of lengthy list, in the foreseeable future, but if I do, you've informed me of the standard that needs to be met when writing about it.

I assume that by Skullcrusher Mountain, you mean this (http://www.jonathancoulton.com/lyrics/skullcrusher-mountain) one?

[identity profile] bercilakslady.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep.

[identity profile] bardling.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds fun!
Could you cut-tag, though, please, as it's an awfully long list/post?

[identity profile] bercilakslady.livejournal.com 2006-11-06 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The "Monkey loves the hocky stick" song is titled Hockey Monkey.

And Paul's third song of the event was "Fluorine Atom".

Lovely to see you, as always. *hugs*

If you want to edit in my handle for "Stolen Dreams," "Brain, Hands, and Heart," and "Mach die Augen Zu," feel free. "Brain, Hands, and Heart" is TTTO [livejournal.com profile] bedlamhouse's "Mind, Hands, and Heart."

It's "Back One Week to the Future."

And it's spelled miriyami.

[identity profile] zsero.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ankh Morpork Shel Zahav, actually. Or אנך מורפורק של זהב, if you prefer.

Marc is definitely still around and being recorded... I have been working with him for Kathy Sands CDs. (He is the guitarist and primary second voice.)

Alas, another song I can't sing when Paul's in the room, then ;)

[personal profile] hms42 2006-11-07 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the song list. This will be helpful when I get to the editing of the music saved. (Next month... I have 2 other projects that are ahead of the housefilk.)

For those who are interested... The computer making the saving throws had a software update last night after I got home... (Figures they would update the recording software, but I find out afterwards.)

Due to a software crash, the first few songs (and they were GOOD!) were lost. :( Recording that did get saved started mid-Tango.

"Fannish Individual" is actually by John Pomeranz and Mary Bentley. It was part of the libretto for "The Pirates of Fenzance".

I'm just the dude who happened to sing it in both performances (LoneStarCon '97 & Bucconneer).

Steve Savitzky (note the spelling) is [livejournal.com profile] mdlbear (which is much harder to misspell, though I've seen it done).

Thanks for the list -- it's always interesting to hear about other people performing my stuff.

"Bin There, Dun That" is by Cat Faber ([livejournal.com profile] catsittingstill)

[personal profile] hms42 2006-11-07 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I was hoping to share the recording of World Inside the Crystal with you, but it unfortunately was lost in the software crash. Audacity has gone to 1.25 non beta for the intel mac. (That's what crashed on me yesterday.)

I will definately get you a copy of "When I was a Lad" when edited.

Thanks.

I'll be doing some field recording with an Intel MacBook; think I'll dual-boot with Ubuntu. I was lucky the last time I used Audacity on it, but it doesn't look as though it's a good thing to count on.

Depending on the nature of the crash and what you did afterward, it's often possible to resurrect most of a crashed Audacity session -- it records in 1MB blocks which get left in the temp directory when it crashes.

[personal profile] hms42 2006-11-07 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
I deleted the temp files since I could not locate the temp folder at the time. :( I did see that 1.3.2 BETA offers better crash recovery. (Both versions are installed (separate folders) and I have to test it in non critical environments.)

The proper title for the song you called "Don't set, on Shabat, a fire" is "A Brief Summary Of Halacha As Understood By A Goy Who Hangs Around Observant Jews A Lot."

:)

Minor Corrections

[identity profile] marapfhile.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You appear to have missed my final number, my own "CD Boxes", also ttto "Little Boxes", which came after "Lilo". (BTW, IIRC, "Lilo" is a Lady Mondegreen original, ttto "Wendy".)

Also BTW, If you're inclined to link them, lyrics to all my numbers are available on some combination of LJ and r.m.f.

[identity profile] marapfhile.livejournal.com 2006-11-07 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] akawil, if I've matched LJ to RL correctly.

Oh, and Abby's mashup was of Nine Inch Nails' "Head Like a Hole" and some part of Carmen.

FWIW, Mike Brown is [livejournal.com profile] mikestruffles.

happyfunpaul sang "Fluorine Atom" (provenance?)

That's an original; words and music both by yours truly.

Merav and Seanan and I co-wrote it, I believe.

Yup.

Spelling correction for one song...

Jamaica is the correct spelling per mta.info. (Mark Glasser's last song.)

Also, Close Your Eyes was followed by the same song in English for those who had not heard the song before. (A lot of people were performing with the song. I have not checked the audio on that one, but I really hope it came out good for madfilkentist.

For future reference... Where is the temp directory hidden?? (I am also recording on a intel MacBook.) Usually its been very stable.

I have no idea where it defaults to on a Mac; on the Linux version there's a tab in the Preferences dialog that not only tells you where it is, but lets you change it.

There's a good chance that it's in a subdirectory called ".Audacity" in your home directory -- I believe that's the Linux default. (I changed it to put it on the same filesystem as the track working directories.)

Re: Minor Corrections

[identity profile] ladymondegreen.livejournal.com 2006-11-09 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Actually the original of Lilo is Windy, not Wendy though that does give me an idea ...

Door to Summer has no 'the' and I just played guitar on Tam Lin, Batya did all the singing parts.
